The Water and Sewerage Authority (WASA) has confirmed that a major 36” transmission main, at Godineau Bridge Mosquito Creek, San Fernando ruptured on Tuesday afternoon.
Preliminary investigations pointed to the failure of a rack supporting the pipeline, which collapsed into the river and caused the rupture.
Given the extent of the collapse, repairs are expected to take between 48 to 72 hours.
WASA said a team was dispatched to the site within minutes, to secure the area, isolate the supply, analyse the situation and commence repairs in the shortest possible time.
The Ministry of Works and Transport was contacted for assistance.
Once the team has assessed the situation repairs will commence.
Currently, WASA is mobilising all resources to carry out these repairs.
Affected areas include: Gulf View, Bel Air, Green Acres, La Romain, Woodland, San Francique, Avocat, South Oropouche, Union Hall, Duncan Village, Palmiste, Sunkist, Esperance, Debe, parts of Penal, Siparia, Quarry Village, Cocoyea, Pleasantville, Vistabella, Marabella and San Fernando.
WASA said it will continue to update the public as repair work progresses.
