The USA strengthened its hold on the lead in the Cricket West Indies (CWI) Women’s U19 Rising Stars T20 Championship with a 47-run win over the Leeward Islands on Saturday at Tarouba.

Shivnarine Chanderpaul’s team led by two points going into the fourth day of the tournament and lengthened their lead to four points after their win in a rain-affected match.

Trinidad and Tobago’s match against Jamaica at Diego Martin was abandoned, as was the Barbados-Windward Islands match at Tarouba.

In the first game of a double header at Tarbuna, the USA stormed to 169 for 2 in 17.5 overs with Snigdha Paul stroking 81 not out off only 53 balls.

Chetnaa Prasad had 36 and Mitali Patwardhan (23) as the USA scored at almost 10 runs an over against the Leeward Islands.

Jazhara Claxton (1/25) was the only Leeward Islands bowler to take a wicket before rains ended the USA innings.

Chasing 169 for victory, the Leeward Islands got to 16 for 1 in seven overs before the rains came again and ended the match.

At Diego Martin, Trinidad and Tobago were in a dicey 50 for 4 after seven overs, when the elements intervened, giving both teams two points for the abandonment.

In the second game at Tarouba, Barbados was 6 for 1 after the first over when the rains forced the abandonment of the match.

Again both teams received two points for the abandoned match.

On Sunday, Leeward Islands take on Jamaica at the Diego Martin Sporting Complex.
