US envoy to speak investment at American Chamber of Commerce

Santo Domingo.- US ambassador, Robin Bernstein, will be the guest speaker at the monthly luncheon of the American Chamber of Commerce of the Dominican Republic (AMCHAMDR) in November when she will speak on the “Opportunities and challenges for increased foreign investment.”

This is the second time that Bernstein participates as guest speaker at the AMCHAMDR event; the first time was Thanksgiving 2018 when she spoke on the topic: “We are United: Moving Together towards Prosperity.”

Bernstein was named Ambassador of the United States in the Dominican Republic by president Donald Trump, and sworn in on July 3, 2018.

Since arriving in the country Bernstein has played a key role in strengthening relations between the two nations and had a very active role in defending the Dominican Republic as a safe tourism destination in international media.

Dominicans spent US$100M during Black Friday, a 22.6% jump

Santo Domingo.- Dominicans spent at least RD$5.3 billion (US$100 million) during Black Friday, held last Friday of November and which in recent years has boosted retail worldwide.

“The figures for this 2019 reached 5.3 billion, thus exceeding by 22.64% the 4.3 billion pesos consumed with cards at points of sale (POS) during 2018, year that had already exceeded 7% to its predecessor 2017,” says a press release by CardNet.

“Black Friday has been this year a great driver of a substantial increase in sales in the national market, said CardNET CEO Luis Bencosme.

“The records indicate a trend of significant increase in purchases from local businesses for this period; and in this year, in particular, the increase has reached a relevant moment, surpassing the activities of recent years.”

US company Apache to spend US$85M to seek natural gas

Santo Domingo.- The US company Apache will invest US$85 million to search for and drill in the hydrocarbon block at the San Pedro maritime basin (east).

This company, the first to win a tender for hydrocarbon exploration in the country, will have four years to carry out the corresponding studies and determine if there is exploitable natural gas in that area.

If so, the entrepreneurs will invest to exploit that resource, said Energy and Mines Minister Antonío Isa Conde, on Wed.

The contract to base the negotiations are under a shared production regime, which guarantees 40% of the profits to the Dominican State, said Isa Conde. “They can also be charged with in kind that is, the State can ask the Apache company to pay with natural gas.

Colombia looks to send the ‘Abuser’ to the US by Saturday

Santo Domingo.- According to the schedule released by Colombian authorities, César Emilio Peralta, alias César el Abusador, could arrive Saturday in the United States, which requested him in extradition and whose representatives interrogate him since his arrest in Colombia.

The alleged capo was arrested Monday morning in Cartagena, Colombia, in an operation by the police in that city.

Cartagena Metropolitan Police commander, Henry Sanabria, said the defendant charged by the US and the Dominican Republic of running an international drug trafficking network said he had been in Colombia for just over three months.

He said he arrived in that nation days after raids in Dominican territory on August 20, which resulted in at least 18 arrests and the seizure of several real estate properties worth millions.
