The United National Congress (UNC) dismissed charges against Pointe-a-Pierre MP David Lee as nothing more than a “PNM distraction”.
Lee is charged with misbehavior in public office and conspiracy to defraud the Government in connection with the purchase and sale of a Mercedes Benz vehicle.
In a statement, the party said Lee, the Opposition Chief Whip, is “innocent and will be vindicated at the courts”.
The UNC complained of a “biased, politicised system of prosecution” noting that sitting members of Government have found themselves the subject of investigations.
It said: “There is no evidence to support the allegations against MP Lee, and thus the police and PNM desperately resorted to the trumped up charge of conspiracy.
Any right thinking person would ask why would MP Lee do any of what he is accused of when there was no benefit to be accrued by him. It just does not make any sense.”
The party said the move was not unexpected, noting former police commissioner Gary Griffith claims that he was instructed by Government to “harass and investigate opposition MPs”.
“This is the typical PNM playbook with complicit operatives within the police service designed to embarrass and defame,” the party stated.
The party maintained Lee’s innocence calling the charges against him “spurious and trumped up”.
