The Trinidad and Tobago Coast Guard (TTCG) said an interceptor vessel has been drydocked for repairs after it became submerged.
In an update, the TTCG said it’s aware of a video circulating on social media showing a beached interceptor of the TTCG’s fleet.
The TTCG said while conducting maritime operations the interceptor experienced a malfunctioning bilge pump causing it to begin taking in water.
The TTCG said the vessel was escorted to their headquarters at Staubles Bay where attempts were made to get the bilge pump working, which proved futile.
The TTCG said attempts were made to tow the boat to the nearest drydocking point, however, while making way the vessel began taking in water and efforts to bail the rapid ingress of water failed, causing it to be submerged.
The TTCG said the interceptor has since been safely recovered and drydocked and is awaiting an assessment to determine damages.
The TTCG said once the process is completed and identified issues rectified, the vessel will return to active service.
The TTCG said it remains committed to providing border security and search and rescue services.
