I will not put down anyone’s culture, heritage or country. Monday celebrates Columbus Day and Indigenous People Day.
The calendar includes many celebrations such as Martin Luther King Day, St. Patrick’s Day, Pulaski Day, Cinco de Mayo, Saint Lucia, Puerto Rican Day, Boxing Day, Black History Month, Hispanic Heritage Month, Juneteenth, U.N. Day.
The most important is Feb. 14, Valentine’s Day — we should all celebrate love.
Cathy Butterfield of Amherst sent me an email noting that Anna Plummer, recent graduate of Amherst College and tour guide at the Emily Dickinson Museum, will discuss her research paper, “A Wind That Rose: Susan Phelps and Emily Dickinson,” which involves a broken engagement, a peculiar Hadley family, a poem or two, and a significant friendship.
The meeting will be Oct. 12 at 1:30 p.m. via Zoom. The talk will be posted for the public on the Woman’s Club website, amherstwomansclub.org.
The Jones Library is holding a “Coming to America” monthly Zoom reading series beginning Oct. 27 at 7 p.m. Lisa Wentworth, head of collections, will facilitate the series, which will explore the immigrant experience and teach more about Yiddish literature.
The series: Oct. 27, “Motl the Cantor’s Son” by Sholem Aleichem; Nov. 17, “Enemies, A Love Story” by Isaac Bashevis Singer; Dec. 15, “A Jewish Refugee in New York” by Kadya Molodovsky; Jan. 19, “The Leavers” by Lisa Ko.
To register, email firstname.lastname@example.org. Books are available thanks to support from the Yiddish Book Center and the “Coming to America” program, according to Wentworth.
Mary Beth Ogulewicz , Senior Services director, shared news about a wonderful program. Photographer Isabella Dellolio will exhibit her work Oct. 16 from 6 to 9 p.m. The photos document the lives of 10 older adults in the Becoming project and more than 200 families in the Front Steps Project.
The best part is the photos will be projected on the back south wall of the Amherst Cinema and be viewable from the parking lot behind Hastings. Wear masks and keep the proper social distance. A limited number of viewers can pass by at one time. It’s free. Rain ***
