The El Socorro Centre for Wildlife Conservation (ESCWC) is appealing to citizens to refrain from buying illegal wildlife.
The call follows the rescue of monkey at a home in Maraval on Sunday evening.
The ceilings in the home made it difficult for the (ESCWC) team to capture the nimble trespasser easily, but a plan involving irresistible silk fig did the trick.
While the primate was able to break some bottles and make quite the mess inside the home, he couldn’t resist a snack of apples and silk fig which was used to lure him out.
The team thanked the homeowner for contacting them and assisting in the humane removal of the monkey. The animal is not native to Trinidad and Tobago and has the potential to carry zoonotic diseases.
The rescued animal was taken to the Wildlife Centre and will see the vet for an examination on Wednesday.
Preliminary observations, however, show that he has some issues with his teeth and mouth, which the team suspects is as a result of his canine teeth being cut and filed down to prevent deep lacerations to the hands of the owners.
Given that the monkey isn’t native to this country, it can’t be released into the wild.
