A 67-year-old Portsmouth man is now on remand at the Dominica State Prison awaiting his sentence following his guilty plea to the charge of unlawful sexual connection against a minor.

Peter Lovell of Glanvillia Portsmouth appeared before the High court of Justice on June 27, 2022– where he pleaded guilty to the charge.

According to the indictment filed by the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP), on the April 14, 2020, at Glanvillia Portsmouth, Lovell had unlawful sexual connection with a girl who was 6-years-old at the time.

State attorney attached to the office of the DPP, Marie Pierre-Louis, accepted the guilty plea and withdrew a second charge of indecent assault against Lovell.

At the court hearing, defense attorney Wayne Norde asked the court for the continuation of his client’s bail until sentencing which the Prosecution had no objection to.

Norde, in his bail application, attempted to sway the court in granting bail to Lovell pursuant to section 6 of the bail act.

He stated Lovell has never missed a court hearing of the matter and assured the Judge that he will be present for his sentencing.

The attorney added that the senior man has never committed another offense while on bail and he suffers from a medical condition.

However, Presiding Judge Justice Wynante Adrien-Roberts, said that due to the seriousness of the offense, she was not minded to grant bail to Lovell.

Before handing down her sentence, Justice Adrien-Roberts ordered a social inquiry report on the 67-year-old to be submitted to the court on or before July 15, 2022, submissions by defense and the prosecution no later than July 22, and a sentencing hearing set for July 27, 2022.
