Roopchand and Alian Mendonca

Search efforts are underway for two fishermen who went missing while working at sea on Wednesday.
Missing are Roopchand, a fisherman for over 50 years, and Venezuelan national, Alian Mendonca. Both men are from Leonora, West Coast Demerara.

A family friend, Peter Thakoor, said the men left for sea on Tuesday afternoon and were expected back Wednesday morning. After hours passed and they did not return, relatives started to worry.

“They normally walk with ice for the catch and we said maybe they working with the other tide. A boat go and buy some bait from them out there and about six hours after, they leave to come home,” Thakoor told the News Room.
On Thursday morning, Thakoor said he gathered a few boats and went in search of the men. A report was later made at the Leonora Police Station.

“From there they take it, they send out aircraft, marine boats and coastguard to do the search,” Thakoor said.
