Jereem Richards smashed the Commonwealth Games record on his way to successfully defending his men’s 200m title on Saturday at Birmingham.
The 28-year-old from Point Fortin powered to the line in 19.80 seconds to finish ahead of England’s Zharnel Hughes (20.12).
Joseph Amoah of Ghana was third in 20.49 seconds.
Richards was awarded the 200m title at the 2018 Games after Hughes was disqualified for impeding Richards with his arm.
There was no doubt this time round as Richards ran a superb bend and powered to the line to obliterate the Commonwealth Games record.
Richards competed in the finals of the 200m at the World Athletics Championships in July 2022.
He also won the 400m indoor title in Belgrade, Serbia in March 2022.
Richard’s gold in the men’s 200m was the fourth medal for Trinidad and Tobago at the Commonwealth Games.
Cyclist Nicholas Paul has won the other three, with gold in the keirin, silver in the sprint, and bronze in the time trial.
