OLD FORGE – A retired SUNY Geneseo professor was recently awarded for one of his submissions in the New York State Juried Sculpture Exhibit at the View Center for Arts and Culture in Old Forge, Herkimer County.

Carl Shanahan, a Hemlock resident and former art professor at the college, took third place in the exhibit for “Rolling Hills,” one of two ceramic sculptures he submitted.

Shanahan displayed a previous iteration of the sculpture in a 2018 exhibit at the Arts Council for Wyoming County. The piece, then called “Landscape,” incorporated uniquely-shaped sticks Shanahan had gathered during years of hiking with friends in the Adirondacks.

Speaking before the 2018 exhibit, Shanahan said his pieces are inspired largely by the cairns, or rock stacks, found scattered throughout the Adirondack region.

“The ceramic pieces are, for the most part, slab construction with an emphasis on a lot of texture,” Shanahan said. “In them, I try to create kind of a landscape. They’re salt fired as far as the glazing, and in some of them I’ve tried to incorporate the roots.”

Stephen Saracino of Buffalo took first place in the juried exhibit for “Vestige Vessel -7 and Brian Menia of Morrisonville, Clinton County, took second for “Frank.”

Honorable mentions were awarded to Marc-Anthony Polizzi of Utica, Oneida County, for “Socially Distant”’; Bill Hastings of Ithaca, Tompkin sCounty, for “Sway”; Catherine Spencer of Syracuse, Onondaga County, for “Self Sabotage”; Nancy Azara of New York City for “Red Stand-In”; and Saracino for “Melancholia.”

The exhibit is on display through March 21. To see other artworks and learn more about the exhibit and the View Center, click here.
