Murdered couple cannot be married in death

The couple who were murdered last weekend in Chaguanas wore matching clothing to separate funerals on Saturday, but a pundit clarified that marrying dead people was not part of Hindu traditions.

Anita Jagdeo, 29, and her fiance Randy Ramdass, 29, were both cremated and their bodies were taken to the Waterloo Cremation Site at the same time. The young couple planned to marry early next year.

Pundit Satyanan Gosine stated that the “million-dollar question” he received in the last few days was whether he planned to marry the “two children.”

“My response to them was that it was none of their business what I do as a pundit.” I follow rites and rituals to do what is right. We’re sending this child off as a bride today, but she wasn’t one. I can’t marry the boy and her. They are both no longer alive.

“We don’t marry the dead. That is not Hindu thought. Who’s going to wear the sindoor? In TT today, the million-dollar question is whether we should send these two children as husband and wife. We simply cannot.”

The bodies of the couple were discovered on December 4 in Jagdeo’s AD waggon on a dirt track off Factory Road in Chaguanas. Both had been assassinated. Ramdass’ body was in the trunk, while Jagdeo’s was in the front passenger seat. No one has been arrested, and the police have no idea why the double homicide occurred.

According to the pundit, what happened to the victims could have happened to anyone.

“Death knows no race, creed, or religion.” This is the emphasis we should place today. Nobody has a guarantee for tomorrow. Death is never announced. “In this world, don’t take anything for granted,” he advised mourners.

“When you are happy, enjoy it to the fullest, but be aware that sadness will visit you one day.” Have you seen what happened to this kid? She was shot in the head. You could be walking down the street when you trip and fall and die.”

The pundit said people have plans and aspirations but asked how many of them come to pass.

He said the couple had dreams of living together, but it did not become a reality.

The couple had a real estate business. Jagdeo worked at Alescon Readymix Ltd, and Ramdass was an electrician. They were last seen alive on December 3 when they left around 4 pm to do a transaction in Couva.
