Martinez Rajas, a 24-year-old prisoner who was incarcerated at the Timehri prison on the East Bank of Demerara (EBD) since April, was found dead on Saturday morning.
According to a release from the Guyana Prison Service, Rajas was found hanging in his cell at about 05:20hrs when a security check was done.
A nurse on duty was summoned and subsequently confirmed that Rajas was unresponsive.
Police escorted the body to the Diamond Diagnostic Centre where the inmate was pronounced dead by a doctor on duty.
Director of Prisons Nicklon Elliot said an investigation is currently being conducted by the police and prison authorities.
Rajas was remanded to prison on April 28 for possession of stolen articles.
