Police arrest 6 in American teacher’s death in Puerto Plata

Puerto Plata.- The National Police arrested six men in connection with murder and robbery of a US citizen in Puerto Plata, five days ago.

The police identified the detainees as Michael Mariñez Rosario (Chayan); Heuri Flores Hernández (Yikiu or Yito); Junior Alexis Suarez (Liquide); Juan José Andújar Mella (Jeffrey); Oroniel Canario Montero; Alexis Maquey and / or Alexis Makenley (Luisito, Gasoil, Azulito).

All were arrested on a warrant for the strangling death Patricia Ann Anton, 63, in her apartment located in Cabarete (north).

Six-vehicle wreck snarls busiest Dominican highway

Santiago.- At least six vehicles were involved in a traffic accident on the Duarte Highway that occurred past noon Friday 141 kilometers north of the capital, Santo Doming, closing both southbound lanes.

According to preliminary reports, some people were only slightly injured.

Traffic and Land Transport (DIGESETT) officers arrived at the crash site to restore traffic.

The cause of the crash has yet to be explained.

Medina’s security detail ‘kidnap’ journalists after ceremony

Santo Domingo.- President Danilo Medina’s security detail on Fri. kept from leaving the journalists who covered a ceremony at the Loyola Polytechnic Institute for 20 minutes “like kidnapped.”

The press platform was blocked where the activity took place which forced the journalists to wait until Medina finished the tour of the facility.

“There the journalists stayed, like a kidnapping, for 20 minutes until the president finished his tour while the other guests at the event had left,” Diario Libre reports.

The journalists protested the situation, but the agents claimed that they were following an order of a female superior officer.

Cruise ships to visit Puerto Plata port by Nov. 2020

Puerto Plata.- The Tourism Ministry, the Dominican Port Authority and the Puerto Plata Port Investment Company, winner of the tender to build a Cruise Terminal in Puerto Plata Port, on Thursday said that by November next year, they’ll already be receiving the first cruise ships.

In a press conference headed by deputy Tourism minister, Julio Almonte, Port Authority director, Víctor Gómez Casanova, and Puerto Plata Port Investment company and Taíno Bay Cruise Terminal CEO Mauricio Hamui, Gómez Casanova said that cruise companies are already selling Puerto Plata as a destination as of November 2020, “because they usually prepare and promote their travel and reservation calendars two years in advance, for sales and marketing purposes.”

The official said they held a meeting yesterday afternoon in the National Palace with president Danilo Medina, who personally monitors the project’s progress.
