More than 500 children, separated from their parents by the U.S. border patrol, are now in the custody of immigration authorities who cannot find their parents.
Separating children from their families was vigorously opposed by many American organizations. But the immigration requirements demanded by the Trump administration overruled what many Americans felt was wrong — the separation of families.
Now 500-plus children apparently are going to become permanent wards of immigration authorities unless they can somehow become reunited with their families.
This callous disregard for family and for child care is a disgrace for everything America holds dear.
Anti-immigration supporters Steve Bannon, Steve Miller, and others who pushed for the administration’s restrictive immigration policies should think about these 500-plus youngsters. This policy has effectively made them orphans.
