No Lifeguards on duty, MP calling for answers

Point-a Pierre MP David Lee is calling on the Minister of National Security and Minister of Tourism, Culture and the Arts to “immediately implement measures which will guarantee the required number of lifeguards needed at several beaches throughout the country.”

In a media release today, Lee said the ministersmust immediately explain to the population why citizens who visit the Maracas, Las Cuevas, Vessigny or Manzanilla beach facilities will be exposed to ‘life-threatening danger’ as there will be no Lifeguards at these facilities until further notice.

“It is totally untenable, delinquent and unacceptable that both the Ministry of Tourism and the Ministry of National Security which is responsible for lifeguards are leaving citizens vulnerable as well as at fatal risk without any mechanisms to save their lives in the event of danger.”

Lee further questioned whether the Government was unable to pay these individuals for their services.

“Is it that the Government has retrenched the life guards who provide services at these beaches or is that the Government is simply cutting costs at the expense of citizens’ safety? How could this be allowed especially during the July/August period when many children and families see these as ideal destinations for relaxation?”

Noting that the move could result in the loss of life or injury, the MP said it was “unacceptable” and warned against the consequences:

“Time and time again we have seen that this Government places little emphasis if any at all on protecting the lives of our citizens and this is yet another slap in the face for our population where a government could simply issue a press release effectively telling taxpayers ‘Fend for yourselves on the beaches,’

The Opposition is firmly warning Minister Randall Mitchell and Minister Hinds that any harm or loss of life as a result of this breach of duty will be on their hands.”

On Saturday the Ministry of Tourism announced that until further notice, there would be no lifeguards on duty at the beaches. It said that citizens should take “extra precautions” during this time.
