Musings on 2020 | Sir Shridath Ramphal QC

By Sir Shridath Ramphal QC

GEORGETOWN, Guyana, Monday January
13, 2020 –
Year 2000, we knew, began a new Millennium. It marked a measurable change. 2020
feels like the start of a new immeasurable era. As a Guyanese, as a West
Indian, as a citizen of the developing world, and as a believer in what the
United Nations stands for, as part of humanity, I face the new time with

It should not be so. As a Guyanese, I should be
confident that oil discoveries will so fortify our country that its national
motto of One people, one Nation, one Destiny will find
fulfilment; yet the deep divisions that infect it speak more to fearful
jeopardies than unity and contentment.

As a West Indian, I should see an
ever-coalescing Caribbean fulfilling the promise of integration it made to
itself; yet its flattery of community has deceived so consistently that belief
in unity and oneness is withering to a point of near non-revival.

As part of the developing world, I despair for our place in the family of nations. Our old assumption, that a new world order, premised on fairness, justice and equality would redress the balance against us, is now dissolving in a toxic brew of introversion and greed by the rich and privileged countries.

As an internationalist – how can I but bemoan retrogression of the notion of an inseparable humanity? The structures of world order persist, and the embrace of globalism, that should have transformed them, slips away. There is admirable activism by the young on the environment, on climate change, and on peace; but inaction by those who must act. The epithets of ‘Make us great again’ and ‘take back control’ attest to warped leadership; but people sustain such leaders, thankfully resisted by others with a larger vision.

As part of humanity – can anyone be upbeat about where our larger country, the Planet, is headed? We believe we are the wisest of all who ever lived, but recent experience suggests that that wisdom is not being employed in ways that should inspire confidence in our way forward in 2020 and beyond.

2020 must not be allowed to perpetuate the uncertainties, disquiet and inequities that have so alarmingly grown into ascendancy. If it is the tipping point, we must back off and find the ‘path less travelled by’ – and, thereby, make hope and promise flourish, and the path to human progress more secure. That is my wish for us all!

Werley Nortreus Considers Presidential Bid Nomination In Haiti

Mr. Werley Nortreus is a Haitian Musical Artist, Author, Entrepreneur, Politician, and the CEO of Ceraphin Corporation, a mass media company that he founded with Kenley Nortreus, his brother. Well, Mr. Werley was born in Limbé but he was raised in Port-au-Prince, the Capital of Haiti. He believes in Humanism and he wants to be a contributor for a better Haiti before the year 2045 arrives by involving in politic because that would be the only way for him. He studied business administration and political science in the U.S. because he wanted to become an Entrepreneur and a Politician to serve Haiti and Haitians, of course. According to him, he believes that the former Haitian Senator Mr. Moise Jean-Charles is the only hope for Haiti because Mr. Moise Jean-Charles is honest and solid like him.

26 years old leader, Werley Nortreus believes that the youth in Haiti and the upcoming generations should see him as a role model so they can have the same mindset and behave exactly like him. He uses his music and books to speak positive messages so the world can become a better place. Hopefully, the future Leader of Haiti believes that Haiti will get on its feet before the year 2045 arrives once he takes offices with Pitit Dessalines (Party).

For years, Werley has contributed towards political movements and activism, include ‘Haitians Lives Matter’ and ‘Black Lives Matter’ movements. Those movements have contributed strong messages about discrimination and racism, especially towards black people in America and around the world. He hopes to inspire many people along his journey to make the world a happier and healthier place to live.

From 2017 until today, millions of protesters and political leaders have taken to the streets across Haiti to demand the resignation of Jovenel Moise and PHTK but Jovenel Moise and PHTK refused to step down and demand dialogue. Werley and Moise Jean-Charles from the opposition rejected dialogue then organized more protests and rallies against Jovenel Moise and PHTK. The current Haitian Government led by President Mr. Jovenel Moise and PHTK want to stay in offices for 50 years but Werley said he will not let that happen and he believes Haiti will never become a well-developed country if PHTK runs the offices for 50 years.

“I think the current President of Haiti Jovenel Moise should resign before more protests take place in 2020 because I realized that the Haitian population won’t stop protesting until he steps down along with his political party.”, said Mr. Werley Nortreus.

One of his greatest goals is to help his homeland earn the respect and position in the global community as viewed through his own eyes. His love and admiration for his home country are evident when you speak with him. Werley is proud to have been born and raised in Haiti, and the culture and its ethnicity mean everything to him.

According to reports, Werley has a deep passion to involve in politic in Haiti and for the right reasons. He hopes one day to become the President or King of Haiti in order to help Haiti get its respect and dignity back. Through his organizations as well as in his personal capacity, Werley has helped when natural calamities destroyed many human lives in Haiti. He believes in unity and he believes Haiti will change one day when Pitit Dessalines take the power from the current Government led by Mr. Jovenel Moise and PHTK.

“As a human being, I believe that I was created in order to value and love other humans like me. Humanism is the reason that I want to become the President of Haiti one day, in order to serve my country and serve other countries around the world.”, said Mr. Werley Nortreus.

In January 2020, the 26 years old leader announced future Presidential bid nomination in Haiti because he wants to put Haiti in the right direction before it’s too late. Werley became a member of Pitit Dessalines in 2019, the best and powerful political party founded by former Senator Mr. Moise Jean-Charles. Werley and Moise are the same and they have the same vision to lead Haiti in the right direction before PHTK ruins everything in Haiti.

“The first wish should be named “A New Haiti” because I’ve always wanted to see Haiti become a significant country in the world. The second wish should be named “Werley Nortreus to become President of Haiti” because I love Haiti so much and I will take all the risks and everything it takes to change the country. The last wish should be named “Haiti is one of the most powerful and respected countries in the world”, because the country has suffered so much, and I believe it’s time for the country to get its power and respect back.”, said Werley Nortreus during an interview with Kreol Magazine in the UK.

“As we all know that there are a lot of Chaos and Riots in Haiti from 2016 until today and the current Leader ‘Jovenel Moise’ and ‘PHTK’ leaders refused to step down, which is not good for the country because the protesters won’t give up the streets until they step down. Honestly, I, Werley Nortreus want to involve in politic in Haiti so I can put the country in the right path so the country can get its respect and dignity back from the elites who stole it.”, said Mr. Werley Nortreus.

He believes that the youth in Haiti and the upcoming generations should see him as a role model so they can have the same mindset and behave exactly like him. He uses his music and books to speak positive messages so the world can become a better place. Hopefully, the future Leader of Haiti believes that Haiti will get on its feet before the year 2045 once he takes offices.

“I would like to debate with Jovenel Moise”. Said Mr. Werley Nortreus.
