THA Minority Leader Kelvon Morris has accused the Tobago Regional Health Authority (TRHA) of operating illegally since the Progressive Democratic Patriots (PDP) entered office in December 2021.
Morris was speaking at a media briefing held by his office on Thursday when he raised several issues including the TRHA’s operations. He said while he tries to be “impartial, fair and reasonable” towards issues as he’s the sole PNM representative, many have him concerned.
“The TRHA, this body corporate has been operating unlawfully for the past 11 months, which is contrary to the Regional Health Authority Act, Chapter 29:05, section four which states that each authority shall be managed by a board of directors.”
Morris charged however that since the last board members demitted office in December 2021, the PDP-led administration, “has failed to appoint a board in accordance to the law of Trinidad and Tobago.”
He explained that according to the law, each authority shall be managed by a board of directors.
“And so as minority leader with the opportunity coming up next Thursday (private members day), I have tabled a motion which calls for the House to mandate the administration and executive to post-haste appoint the board of directors of the TRHA in keeping with the law.”
Morris also took issue with plans to construct a stage on Scarborough’s seafront for the island’s upcoming Carnival activities.
“The carnival will come and go but whatever we do here, we will have to live with it. Is a carnival worth the destruction of Tobago? Yes, we have to do, what we have to do, to have a good carnival but if we don’t have the stage out in the sea, would that stop the carnival?”
On Tuesday, the Environmental Management Authority (EMA) said the stage was one of several infrastructural projects the THA was undertaking without the requisite certificates of environmental clearance (CEC).
