As several parts of the country continue to grapple with the effects of 180 per cent more rain than usual, the Trinidad and Tobago Meteorological Service (TTMS) has downgraded the adverse weather alert from orange to yellow.
But, this doesn’t mean that the rains are over.
In Adverse Weather Alert #4, the TTMS noted that the severity of conditions is moderate, with sporadic showers of varying intensities expected to persist over the next 24 hours.
The TTMS said a medium to high chance of heavy showers and/or thunderstorms still exist which can produce rainfall accumulation in excess of 25 mm in a few areas.
Further, it noted that gusty winds can still occur, especially in the vicinity of heavy showers/thunderstorms.
Street/flash flooding and localised ponding are also likely in heavy downpours, slowing run-off in already flooded areas. Landslides/landslips are also possible in areas so prone.
The TTMS added that seas are likely to also be affected; they can become agitated at times in sheltered areas.
While the alert level has been downgraded for overall weather conditions, communities near the Caroni and South Oropouche Rivers continue to be impacted by floods. An orange level Riverine Flood Alert remains in effect.
The TTMS urged people to take all precautions, and encouraged them to avoid wading through or driving through flood waters. It also advised that people secure loose outdoor items and livestock.
