Those enjoying the Christmas season will have more time to make merry this year, with a four-day long weekend planned for the Christmas holiday.
Under Section (3)(2) of the Public Holidays and Festivals Act,:
“Where a public holiday falls on a Sunday or where two public holidays fall on the same day, the next following day that (apart from this subsection) is not a public holiday shall be a public holiday.”
Therefore the holidays would be observed on Christmas Day, Sunday, December 25, Boxing Day on Monday December 26, and also on Tuesday December 27, 2022.
There’s also another four-day Christmas long weekend in 2023, with Christmas Day falling on a Monday and Boxing Day falling on a Tuesday.
Overall, in 2023, there are approximately seven long weekends:
- New Years Day: Sunday January 1, observed on Monday January 2, 2023
- Easter: Good Friday, April 7 to Easter Monday, April 10, 2023
- Labour Day: Monday, June 19, 2023
- Republic Day: Sunday, September 24, observed on Monday, September 25, 2023
- Divali (to be confirmed): Sunday, November 12, observed on Monday, November 13*
- Christmas Day: Monday, December 25, 2023
- Boxing Day: Tuesday, December 26, 2023
