Socialism sucks all the hopes and dreams out of the common person. It consumes everything they have earned through hard work. It confiscates their homes, automobiles, savings, and in some cases their very lives. Living on the margin of poverty follows. There is no freedom of religion, no credit cards, no bank accounts, no retirement plans, no stocks. The common person is in effect a ward of the state.
Your food is rationed. You cannot go anywhere without permission and just cause that the government decides. You cannot maintain a property because you can’t afford spackle, wood or paint. One good thing is that graffiti is not present because no one can afford spray paint.
People can work if jobs become available. People are always looking for food or bartering with household items. Only government officials and those who are like-minded can live comfortably.
My family has been helping relatives who are stuck in Cuba. So far we have taken them a wheelchair, food, clothing, money and, believe it or not, a toilet seat.
Fidel Castro came into Havana with great hopes by the people who were suppressed by the previous regime. Castro, his brother Raul and chief henchman Che Guevara, confiscated people’s guns and shot any opposition. I had to leave. Cuba used to be a paradise. Now it is a wasteland. Gone is the music and laughter.
People must teach their children about the terrible curse of socialism because they think everything will be free. Freedom isn’t free.
