West Indies opener Tagenarine Chanderpaul has made his Test debut and has received his first cap from batting legend Brian Lara.
The 26-year-old was selected for his maiden Test cap against Australia at Perth after scoring heavily in the 2022 first-class season.
Chanderpaul, who has averaged 34.21 in 50 first-class matches, totaled 439 runs with two centuries during the 2022 West Indies championship.
He also notched 119 and a half-century against the Prime Minister’s XI last week in a trial match in Canberra.
Lara, who batted with his father Shivnarine Chanderpaul when he debuted in 1994, was there to mark the moment.
Shivnarine Chanderpaul was at the crease with Lara when he broke Sir Garry Sobers’ record for the highest Test match score later in the series against England in 1994.
West Indies also wore black armbands in tribute to former wicketkeeper-batsman David Murray, who died on Friday in his native Barbados.
Murray, 72, played 19 Tests and 10 ODIs and held a record nine catches in the 1981 Boxing Day Test at the MCG.
Before the start of the match, West Indies and Australia took part in the barefoot circle with an Elder of the Descendents of the First Nations Australians.
West Indies took the knee before the start of the match to continue to demonstrate full support for the fight against racism, inequality, and justice.
Australia won the toss and batted first in the 1st Test of the two-match series at Perth.
