West Indies legend Brian Lara has been appointed head coach of the Sunrisers Hyderabad for the 2023 season of the Indian Premier League (IPL).
The 53-year-old, who joined the team as a batting coach and strategic adviser in 2021, replaced Tom Moody, who led the team during the past two seasons.
“The cricketing legend Brian Lara will be our head coach for the upcoming #IPL seasons,” Sunrisers Hyderabad tweeted on Saturday.
The Sunrisers finished eighth in the 2022 edition of the IPL, which saw 10 teams compete for the first time.
The Hyderabad franchise also finished eighth in 2021, also under Australian Moody.
The team was skippered by Kane Williamson in 2022 and included West Indies stars Nicholas Pooran and Romario Shepherd.
The Sunrisers Hyderabad have made it to the IPL playoffs in six of the 10 seasons, since 2013.
They were champions in 2016 and runners-up in 2018.
Lara is acknowledged as one of the greatest batsmen to play the game.
The former West Indies captain played 131 Tests and 299 ODIs, scoring 53 international hundreds.
Lara holds the world record for the highest individual score in Test cricket (400 not out) and the highest individual score in first-class cricket (501 not out).
