A Jamaican marine engineer who has been charged with drug offences was remanded in police custody in Barbados last week.
Ralph James, a 61-year-old resident of Spanish Town in Jamaica, is charged with possession of a huge quantity cannabis. He is also accused of intending to supply and traffic the drug.
The Jamaican appeared in a Barbados court, where he was not required to plead to the charges.
He is to return to court on December 14.
It was alleged that on Saturday, November 7, James was arrested following the discovery of 138.4 kilogrammes of cannabis in his possession.
He was reportedly caught within the limits of Barbados’ exclusive zone.
It is believed that James had intentions to supply and traffic the drugs, according to media reports.
The illegal drugs had an estimated street value of BD$553,600, with the Barbadian exchange rate being 2-1 US dollar. The Jamaican dollar value of the drugs is approximately $40 million.
