The Parliamentary Sectoral Committee on Foreign Relations is giving its full support to the Guyana Government to take all necessary actions to safeguard the national interest of Guyana.

The committee which brings together members from both the Government and Opposition met on Monday and was briefed by the Foreign Affairs Minister on the latest decree by Venezuela claiming land and maritime space that belongs to Guyana.

In a statement, the Parliamentary Committee said it has taken note of the latest aggressive actions by Venezuela in furtherance of its spurious claim to Guyana’s territory.

The Committee said it joins the Government of Guyana in condemning in the strongest possible terms, the implementation of any law by Venezuela with extra territorial application and which seeks to give jurisdiction to Venezuela over marine and submarine areas solely on the basis of unilateral action, in contravention of international law and without due regard for the rights of Guyana.

“The Committee supports the efforts of Government of Guyana to take all necessary actions to safeguard the national interests of Guyana and reiterates the sentiments already echoed that Guyana stands united and resolute in the protection of our sovereignty and territorial integrity”, the statement said.

Since the announcement of the decree by the Venezuelan President, President Irfaan Ali has rejected the move and Guyana’s Opposition Leader has also condemned the latest actions by Venezuela.

The Government of Canada has become Guyana’s latest partner expressing concern over the Venezuelan decree.

Guyana currently has a case before the International Court seeking the Court’s reinforcement of the validity of the 1899 Arbitral Award which settled the border controversy.
