Guyana: Ministry of Health working on a Package of Essential Health Services/ Primary Health Care. This morning at Duke Lodge, Kingston, Georgetown, Regional Health Officers (RHOs) and Programme Directors of the Ministry of Health met to begin discussions on the ‘Package of Essential Health Services’ to be offered to citizens that will improve medical services delivered at a primary health care level.

This morning’s meeting was the beginning of a two-days long activity, which aims to set a national healthcare agenda for 2023. Minister of Health, Dr Frank Anthony took time off from his busy schedule to be present at this morning’s opening session.

In his remarks, Dr Anthony says that this is a very timely discussion, as it not only facilitates ideas on what needs to be implemented but provides the opportunity for strategic planning on how these ideas will be implemented.

“This morning is a good opportunity to set the context of what we are trying to accomplish and then situate primary healthcare around that context”, Minister Anthony said.

In closing, Minister reminded the RHOs and Directors that if they want the health sector to go in the desired direction, it is important that they are ready to put in the work.

This morning at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC), Trinidadian Robotics dealer, A.A. Laquis conducted a very thorough demonstration of one of the company’s most recent innovations, ‘Freehand’.

This activity was made possible through the British High Commission’s Department for International Trade.

This new technology has the capability of mastering surgeon vision due to a stable and tremor free camera image, increasing safety for team and patient by reducing the risk of cross infection, increasing surgeon control, reducing surgical time by up to 20% and optimising ergonomics.

The Freehand robot is applicable to general, urological, gynecologic as well as thoracic surgeries.
