Nicolette Fernandes’ feat of being the first Guyanese to win a divisional title at the World Masters Squash Championships is being celebrated by her countrymen and women.

Fernandes defeated South African Slyoli Waters 11-6, 11-5, 11-5 to claim the Over 35 gold on August 27.

President Dr Mohammed Irfaan Ali congratulated Fernandes on her success and placing Guyana on the international map as a powerhouse in squash.

“Nicolette has turned out yet another stellar performance and, in so doing, has secured personal success and brought national glory to our country. She remains one of Guyana’s most inspirational sporting heroines,” he wrote.

“I wish her continued success and thank her for being such a fine and enduring example for our young people.”

A Guyanese man commented on social media: “Nicolette’s victory shows that you can achieve your goals once you put your mind to it. Congratulations and continue to make Guyana proud.”

Another man said: “Congratulations Nicolette on your world title. All of Guyana is proud of you.”

A woman wrote: “Congratulations! You deserve this! Thank you for your hard work and passion. May God continue to bless and guide you to achieve your life and career goals.”
