The French Central Government will be stepping in to assist local officials in Guadeloupe in responding to the devastation caused by Hurricane Fiona on Friday and Saturday.

“The state of natural disaster will be recognised and the overseas relief fund mobilized. I asked the minister delegate to go there,” French President Emmanuel Macron said in a tweet.

Gérald Darmanin, Minister of the Interior and Overseas, said the government would be working to speed up the delivery of assistance to Guadeloupe.

“The State will be there for our Guadeloupe compatriots,” Darmanin stated.

Strong winds and floods from Hurricane Fiona damaged roads, bridges and homes.

Officials are currently touring the islands to assess the damage.

One man died when his home, which is located at Rivière des Pères in Basse-Terre, was washed away by floodwater.

The French president has sent condolences to the man’s family and friends.
