Amidst rising food prices, steps are being taken to address challenges to food security.
To this end, Agriculture Minister Kazim Hosein met with stakeholders from the agricultural sector on Monday.
Stakeholders engaged in agro-processing, apiary, livestock and more attended the meeting on the establishment of an Agricultural Multi-disciplinary Committee.
The forum will enable members to provide insight into the challenges affecting the agricultural sector, as well as propose solutions and give periodic updates on new developments that would benefit the sector.
The Advisory Committee will also be able to share their expertise with the ministry’s executive and technical staff on key agricultural issues. Both parties will then establish a framework that will place emphasis on the country’s food security issue and the necessary steps required to mitigate the challenges currently faced.
Minister Hosein, along with the members of the Advisory Committee will continuously evaluate the requirements of each agricultural division to ensure the achievement of the Government’s mandate so that it meets the needs of the farmers and fishermen.
The Minister will also visit all operations, within both the private and public sectors’ agricultural system to facilitate the initiative.
The formation of the Advisory Committee is an assurance that decisions made within the agricultural sector will include full consultation with people who are directly involved and with the country’s best interests at the forefront.
