Five Trinidad and Tobago players were selected for the West Indies U19 women’s team to play the USA in five T20I matches at Central Broward County Stadium in Florida from 8-14 August.

T&T U19 skipper Shalini Samaroo was named as vice-captain for the West Indies U19 team.

Also named are wicketkeeper-batter Shunelle Sawh, batter Djenaba Joseph, medium pacer KD-Jazz Mitchell, and all-rounder Samara Ramnath.

Former West Indies and Trinidad and Tobago captain Merissa Aguilleira is the team manager.

The Guyana all-rounder Asmini Munisar was named captain, with former Leeward Islands batsman Steve Liburd as head coach.

The 12-member squad also includes West Indies Women’s A team player Zaida James, who was a traveling reserve with the West Indies senior women’s team.

“History has been created with the selection of this West Indies Under-19 team. No cricket tournaments were played during the pandemic, and it was therefore not only important but also an eye-opener to view the girls in the recent U19 tournament,” Lead Selector Ann-Browne John said of the team.

“The selectors were extremely pleased with the quality of skill shown by these young players. The team has a good mix of batting and bowling including some left-handers,” she added.

Browne-John singled out skipper Munisar and T&T batter Joseph as having impressed during the recent CWI Women’s U19 Championships in Trinidad.

The former West Indies highlighted the importance of the series for the upcoming T20 World Cup.

“This series as well as a few other planned upcoming events would help the players in their development thrust as they prepare for the ICC Under-19 Women’s T20 World Cup in January,” said John-Browne.

The series is ideal preparation for the inaugural edition of the ICC U19 Women’s T20 World Cup, which is set for January 2023 in South Africa.

The USA U19 team recently won the CWI Rising Stars Women’s U19 T20 Championships in Trinidad, playing unbeaten throughout the tournament.

The USA U19 women’s team is coached by the former West Indies batsman Shivnarine Chanderpaul.
