Economic activity index jumps 4.8% in August

Santo Domingo.- Dominican Republic’s Central Bank on Tue. said the monthly economic activity index (IMAE) posted a 4.8% growth in August, maintaining the average accumulated expansion of the period January-August 2019 at 4.7%.

“This reflects that the Dominican economy has reacted favorably to the easing of monetary measures implemented as of June of this year, as expected by the Central Bank.”

“The results of the IMAE in August 2019 are mainly based on the increase in the real added value of the following economic activities: Mining and Quarrying (12.4%), Financial Services (12.3%), Construction (8.7% ), Other Services Activities (6.3%), Energy and Water (6.2%), Real Estate Activities (5.2%) and Agriculture (4.9%),” the Central Bank said.

‘Toads and tarantulas’ coalition aims to win Dominican Senate

Santo Domingo.- A coalition of opposition parties dubbed ‘toads and tarantulas’ on Thursday announced 24 joint Senate candidacies with alliances in as many provinces leading to the May 2020 elections.

It said the purpose is to out the ruling Dominican Liberation Party (PLD).

The Modern Revolutionary Parties (PRM), of the Dominican Workers (PTD), People’s Force, Christian Social Reformist (PRSC), Dominican Humanist (PHD), Christian Democratic Quisqueyano (PQDC), Social Democratic Revolutionary (PRSD), National Unity ( PUN), Frente Amplio and the Progressive National Force (FNP), Alliance for Democracy (APD), Dominicans for Change (DXC) and the Social Democratic Institutional Block (BIS) signed the agreement.

It reiterated that the candidacies by provinces under the coalition “ensure that in the elections of next May there will be a profound renewal in the composition and representativeness of the Senate of the Republic.”

Shortly after the announcement, president Danilo Medina labeled the pact as a coalition of ‘toads and tarantulas,’ in apparent reference to their wide range of ideologies.

Despite flap, the Govt. to buy more facial recognition cameras

Santo Domingo.- The National Emergency Service on Thurs. said  that it’s expanding the surveillance camera system with equipment purchased from several suppliers, in acquisitions “which are carried out with full transparency.”

The Emergency System said that facial recognition cameras, referred to by US Senator Marco Rubio, and donated by China, have been used to strengthen citizen security and the surveillance system.

In a statement Emergency Service said the cameras “have improved the safety of our cities since their implementation in 2014, thanks to the collaboration of several partners.”

It adds that that surveillance system has been strengthened with financing and technical support from the United States Government, Taiwan and the technical support by Orange.

“In fact, we are currently expanding the camera system with equipment purchased from various suppliers, acquisitions that are carried out with full transparency.”

AES Dominicana donates first smart solar sunflower in DR

Santo Domingo.- The AES Dominicana Foundation donated to the Juan Bosch City Renewable Energy Theme Park, the first smart sunflower in the Dominican Republic and the Caribbean region, as a contribution to the Government’s new initiative that will help create citizen awareness about the importance of energy sources that contribute to sustainability.

The entity, the social arm of the AES Group in the Dominican Republic, said the donation is part of its commitment to support projects that involve renewable energy, environmental preservation and efforts to achieve each less emission to the atmosphere.

The intelligent solar sunflower is located in the park’s Sol Station. It is also composed of a series of solar panels. It’s one of the main attractions of the park and has a capacity to generate 4,550 Kwh per year, in addition to having an innovative photovoltaic application that allows you to turn automatically following the path of the sun.

“It is an honor for the AES Foundation, to be part of the effort public-private Renewable Energy Theme Park in Ciudad Juan Bosch, built under the coordination of the Ministries of Energy and Mines and the Presidency, institutions that we congratulate on this initiative,” the Foundation said in a statement.
