Dominican Republic sends relief to the Bahamas

Santo Domingo.- The Dominican Government Mon on. sent 34.4 tons of food and medicine, as well as relief and humanitarian assistance units to Abaco Island, in the Bahamas, to assist in search and rescue debris removal, and distribution of foodstuffs to the population affected by Hurricane Dorian

Foreign minister, Miguel Vargas and Defense minister Rubén Paulino Sem, headed the dispatch of the aid.

“The humanitarian spirit that characterizes the Dominicans is evident in the face of this tragedy of great proportions,” said Vargas, who said the mission was ordered by president Danilo Medina.

Santo Domingo.- China’s Embassy in the Dominican Republic on Wednesday expressed its “firm rejection” of the statements by US Senator Marco Rubio against Chinese facial recognition technology. and image capture of vehicle license plates, actions attributed to his government

US Coast Guard detains 51 Dominican boatpeople

San Juan.- US authorities intercepted 52 boatpeople aboard a yola type boat ship that came from the Dominican Republic and sought to enter Puerto Rico irregularly, the Coast Guard said Thursday, EFE reports.

The vessel was intercepted in the Mona Passage between the eastern Dominican Republic and western Puerto Rico, a territory of the United States.

The group included 51 Dominicans and one Cuban, 39 men and 13 women, who were safely returned to the Dominican Republic, the Coast Guard said in a statement.

US envoy to speak investment at American Chamber of Commerce

Santo Domingo.- US ambassador, Robin Bernstein, will be the guest speaker at the monthly luncheon of the American Chamber of Commerce of the Dominican Republic (AMCHAMDR) in November when she will speak on the “Opportunities and challenges for increased foreign investment.”

This is the second time that Bernstein participates as guest speaker at the AMCHAMDR event; the first time was Thanksgiving 2018 when she spoke on the topic: “We are United: Moving Together towards Prosperity.”

Bernstein was named Ambassador of the United States in the Dominican Republic by president Donald Trump, and sworn in on July 3, 2018.

Since arriving in the country Bernstein has played a key role in strengthening relations between the two nations and had a very active role in defending the Dominican Republic as a safe tourism destination in international media.
