Residents of Cumuto in East Trinidad staged a fiery protest on Monday morning (November 21) to express their dissatisfaction over poor road conditions in the village.
From as early as 5am the Cumuto Main Road, in the vicinity of Cold Storage, was made impassable as people lit debris that had been spread across the road.
Residents said road conditions are terrible and deteriorating rapidly.
Meanwhile, MP for Cumuto/ Manzanilla, Dr Rai Ragbir noted that despite the protest, he understands what the residents feel.
“I empathise with the residents whatever challenges they have faced, the damage to their vehicles and the higher cost of taxi fares. Sometimes the children cannot go to school.”
Ragbir said heavy trucks keep destroying the roads, which are further affected by heavy rains. The MP said that an attempt was made to grade the road on Saturday but this was shelved to moisture levels.

He said repairs are due to begin soon.
“I have reached out to the relevant officials and work is supposed to commence soon. The contractor assured that the road will paved this week.”
