Blast in tower under construction kills 2, injures 4

Santo Domingo.- A blast Tuesday night in a tower under construction rocked the Evaristo Morales sector in the National District.

Thus far the authorities have reported two fatalities and at least four injured.

National District Fire chief José Luis Herasme told Diario Libre that the explosion occurred in a building under construction and that the victims were workers.

He said they work on identifying the victims, as well as their nationals, but said that most of them are Haitians.

Border guards nab cigarettes, moonshine in armored truck

Dajabon, Dominican Republic.- Border Security (CESFRONT) guards, on Wed. seized contraband smuggled into the country through the border in this northwestern city.

The agency reports that around 5:30pm Wednesday, a military patrol stopped an armored truck of a recognized company containing thousands of packs of cigarettes and the Haitian moonshine, “clerén.”

The search was carried out on the Dajabón-La Fe road near the border. Arrested: José Pérez Espinal and Elido Antonio Peralta Almonte, driver and helper of the Daihatsu armored truck

Dominicans spent US$100M during Black Friday, a 22.6% jump

Santo Domingo.- Dominicans spent at least RD$5.3 billion (US$100 million) during Black Friday, held last Friday of November and which in recent years has boosted retail worldwide.

“The figures for this 2019 reached 5.3 billion, thus exceeding by 22.64% the 4.3 billion pesos consumed with cards at points of sale (POS) during 2018, year that had already exceeded 7% to its predecessor 2017,” says a press release by CardNet.

“Black Friday has been this year a great driver of a substantial increase in sales in the national market, said CardNET CEO Luis Bencosme.

“The records indicate a trend of significant increase in purchases from local businesses for this period; and in this year, in particular, the increase has reached a relevant moment, surpassing the activities of recent years.”

US company Apache to spend US$85M to seek natural gas

Santo Domingo.- The US company Apache will invest US$85 million to search for and drill in the hydrocarbon block at the San Pedro maritime basin (east).

This company, the first to win a tender for hydrocarbon exploration in the country, will have four years to carry out the corresponding studies and determine if there is exploitable natural gas in that area.

If so, the entrepreneurs will invest to exploit that resource, said Energy and Mines Minister Antonío Isa Conde, on Wed.

The contract to base the negotiations are under a shared production regime, which guarantees 40% of the profits to the Dominican State, said Isa Conde. “They can also be charged with in kind that is, the State can ask the Apache company to pay with natural gas.
