ANNOUNCEMENT: Dominica State College Offers Tour Guide Training

From the year 2006, the Dominica State College has been conducting training programs to improve the Tourism Industry in Dominica.  They are pleased to announce the continuation of their Tour Guide Training Program. The Tour Guide Training Program is geared at introducing participants to critical knowledge and skills required to operate effectively as tour guides. It also places much emphasis on the encouragement of proper attitudes in dealing with visitors. Some of the main areas covered in the training include:

  • Dominica’s Marine Environment
  • Professional Tour Guiding Skills
  • Effective Communication
  • Flora and Fauna of Dominica
  • Effective Customer Service
  • Dominica’s History and Culture

Participants will be required to complete oral, written, and practical tests to receive certification.

The Dominica State College encourages members of the public to register at the Division of Tourism and Hospitality Studies and pay a contribution of five hundred dollars ($500) at the Bursar’s Office, no later than Monday, October 7, 2019. The Tour Guide Training will take place at the UWI Open Campus’s Auditorium on Elshall Road from October 7th– 11th from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

The Dominica State College encourages the public to take full advantage of this training opportunity.

Eighteen organizations benefit from President’s Charities Foundation

Eighteen charitable organizations in Dominica have benefited from proceeds raised during the President’s Charities Foundation fundraising dinner for 2018.

Some of the recipient organizations include the Dominica Association of Persons with Disabilities (DAPD), St Jerome’s Ministry, Lupus Foundation, Dominica Council on Aging, R.E.A.C.H, House of Hope, St Vincent De Paul Society (Roseau & Northern Branches), The Social Centre (St. Ann’s Day Nursery) , Operation Youth Quake, and the Dominica Dementia Foundation.

The ceremony for the handing over of the cheques was held at the St. Alphonsus Parish Hall on Wednesday, November 13th , 2019.

President of Dominica His Excellency, Charles Savarin, said at the ceremony that this year’s gross receipt of $EC110, 105 for the fundraising dinner represented a slight increase over last year’s amount of $EC99,000.

A total of $EC23,000 was given out to eleven of the eighteen charitable organizations and the rest will be disbursed in visits made to the other institutions.

He added that the net surplus this year was $EC68,612 compared to $EC64,000 last year.

“We also contributed $10,000 to the Mahaut scout troop… for support in the completion of their den. Also, following the disaster of Hurricane Dorian in the Bahamas, the government established an appeal fund to which the President’s Charities Foundation contributed $5,000 and we have reserved $10,000 for the hosting of the children’s Christmas party,” His Excellency explained.

He also said that $EC5,000 was placed in a reserve fund which will be used to assist different establishments in their time of need.

The President called on the general public to support the fundraising dinner.

DOWASCO apologizes to customers from Laplaine for the unscheduled interruption to their water supply which is due to the heavy rainfall.

DOWASCO would like to assure these customers that we are working to have the problem rectified in the quickest possible time.

DOWASCO regrets any inconveniences which may have been caused by the interruptions in the supply and thanks its customers and the general public for the cooperation and understanding during the process of restoring the supply.

Anette Sanford speaks out on $120,000 DLP offer

United Workers Party (UWP) Candidate for the Salybia Constituency, Anette Thomas-Sanford, has shed some more light on a recent statement which she made about a $120,000 offer made to her by strategists of the Dominica Labour Party (DLP), including Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit.

She made the revelation during her launching ceremony held on the weekend and made it clear that as “a patriot” who stands “on principle” she was not for sale.

According to a statement posted on her Facebook Page today [Thursday], Thomas- Sanford confirmed that she had a meeting with Prime Minister Skerrit at Castle Comfort in the presence of 3 other persons whom she named.

She said she has already contacted the police and informed them of the sensitive information that she will be releasing in terms of audio recordings made to her under the direction and with the blessings of the Prime Minister of the Commonwealth of Dominica.

Thomas-Sanford also begged the police to grant protection to her and her family, “especially my two children and my husband.”
