Leader of the Alliance for Change (AFC), Khemraj Ramjattan today joined calls for Chief Executive Officer of the Guyana Sugar Corporation (GUYSUCO), Sasenarine Singh to resign from his position or be fired, declaring that there is no future for the sugar industry under the current CEO.

Ramjattan, who is also the Opposition spokesperson on Agriculture in Parliament, said the Guysuco CEO has shown that he is not competent to move the industry forward.

Earlier this year, Vice President Bharrat Jagdeo also spoke of the need to restructure the management of the sugar corporation, but nothing has been done since.

The Guyana Agricultural and General Workers Union (GAWU) has also expressed no confidence in Singh’s ability to turn the ailing industry around.

“Sugar with Sasenarine, certainly has no future. The AFC had indicated that the CEO is an unsuitable candidate for the governance and the administration of GUYSUCO. He knew nothing about sugar and has been appointed as part of the favoritism proactice and procedure adopted by the PPP government since its installation in 2020,” Ramjattan said during a press conference today.

According to the AFC Leader, the recently leaked audio recording of a GuySuCo Board meeting revealed that sugar company has bigger problems than expected and is clearly in the wrong hands.

“The entire industry has huge problems. The problem of unity between the directorship of the board and the CEO. If you are going to have polarization to the extent whereby, prostitute talks is going to be carried out in such an important board as GUYSUCO, then the government don’t have to only stop tractor purchases, but they must knock off Sasenarine Singh, he is showing that he is totally incompetent,” Ramjattan said.

When Singh took over the management of the state-owned sugar company in 2020, he promised to turn it around from its years of big losses.

But a few months ago, the corporation saw its lowest sugar production figures in over 50 years.

And there was also concern about a shortage of sugar for the local market. The company has since dispelled that contention and is now working with the Guyana Marketing Corporation to get its products to consumers.

Workers at GuySuCo have also been staging protest actions over the management and other issues.
