A Princes Town man has been charged with the murders of one-year-old Nova Shai Brereton and her mother, Sachel Kernell Elliot, 32.
Cleon Teesdale, 42, also known as ‘Salva’, of Indian Walk, Moruga is due to appear before a Princes Town Magistrate on Friday (December 30) to answer charges of murder, attempted murder and firearm-related offences.
He was also charged with the attempted murder of the baby’s father, Ackiel Brereton, 40.
According to police reports, around 7:50pm on December 19, Ackeil was visiting baby Nova and her mother, who ran a mini-mart located at her home.
Two men in a blue Toyota Aqua arrived at the premises, where they allegedly exited the vehicle armed with a rifle and started shooting at Ackiel, striking him, one-year-old Nova and Sachel.
The driver and his accomplice then escaped in their vehicle.
While on mobile patrol, W/Sgt Bassarath and PC Ascevero received the report of a shooting and intercepted a vehicle along Manahambre Road and arrested a man.
Under the supervision of Detective Inspector Aslim Hosein and Sgt Smith, an investigative team of the Homicide Bureau Region Three conducted enquiries.
The evidence was presented before the Deputy Director of Public Prosecutions Joan Honore Paul, who advised that Teesdale be charged with the murders of baby Nova and her mother, and the attempted murder of the child’s father.
Teesdale was also charged for possession of ammunition, possession of firearm, possession of ammunition to endanger life and possession of firearm to endanger life.
The investigation was spearheaded by Superintendent (Ag.) Sean Dhillpaul.
