What’s the point of reading? Is there any actual benefit to reading?
There are proven lifetime benefits to reading that extend beyond enjoyment.
Here are three great reasons reading should be your favourite pastime.
Builds your vocabulary:Research has found that reading boosts comprehension and aids in broadening a person’s expression and language. Reading helps to increase exposure to new words, which can contribute to better communication skills. While there is obvious benefit at the formative childhood, building your vocabulary is something beneficial at any age.
Stress reliever: Reading can contribute to reduced stress levels by helping the body to relax. When you’re wrapped up in a good book, without even noticing it the leisurely activity helps slow breathing and take your mind of stressful everyday problems. This promotes a feeling of overall well-being by regulating heart rate and lowering blood pressure. As a healthy exercise, reading may contribute to better mental health.
Prevents age-related cognitive decline: Reading helps keeps our minds engaged as we age, slowing the decline in cognitive function as we get older. Studies support this as older folks who read and engage in mathematical problem solving daily can improve attention, memory and other brain functions.
